Opening a page

man followed by a command's name prints that command's manual. Every page follows the same layout, so once you can read one you can read them all:

  • NAME: the command and a one-line summary of what it does.
  • SYNOPSIS: how to invoke it. In cmd [OPTION]... [FILE]..., square brackets mean optional and ... means repeatable. This single line tells you the shape of the command.
  • DESCRIPTION: the full prose, including every option.

On a normal terminal man opens the page in a pager you scroll with the arrow keys and quit with q (and search with /word). In this sandbox the page is printed straight to your output instead, but the content is identical.

Every command ships its own manual. Open the one for ls with man and read its NAME and SYNOPSIS sections.
