Just the one-line summary

When you only want a reminder of what a command does, whatis prints the NAME summary without the whole page:

whatis grep # grep (1) - print lines that match patterns

Notice the (1) after the name. It isn't decoration: it's the section of the manual the page lives in, and the next step is about what that means.

For a quick reminder without the whole page, whatis prints just the summary line. Run whatis ls — note the (1): that's the manual section the page lives in.
